This image shows the tiny threadlike cells of the spirochetal agent of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi). These bacteria were cultured from the midgut of tick collected on Block Island, RI. The Rich lab studies genotype distributions of these spirochetes in tick vectors and natural rodent reservoirs.
